Depending on the method used, Sable Drosophila metabolic screening systems are capable of measuring the metabolic rates of small groups of Drosophila, or even of individual Drosophila in real time. This unique capability provides a powerful tool for biomedical and basic research requiring metabolic data. Real-time metabolic data on individual flies preserves vital information on inter-individual variability, increasing the power of statistical tests.

Metabolic rate is measured via CO₂ production rate, which is a highly sensitive and widely accepted method. When monitoring respiratory quotients (RQ) is of interest, the FC-2 differential oxygen analyzer would be added to the system.
